Cross Contamination

I appreciate your response. I am a "foodie". Always have been, used to teach cooking. I do eat out quite a bit; although not as much as I would like to. I do not go to "chain restaurants". I feel lik…

How do you deal with Cross Contamination in Restaurants and in friends homes? People do not seem to understand the seriousness of it. Also, many foods say "gluten free" on the front but on the side o…

I also feel that I am "an annoyance" to my host. I often bring my own food and explain ahead of time. I find that it is almost impossible for NON GF people to truly make a GF meal. Good Luck

Anyone know of a restaurant in D.C. with a Gluten Free menu? Capitol Grill is one, but I am there for a week. Any ideas?

I second Mariposa! They also have a shop in the SF Ferry Building, but I don't know if it's a cafe like the Oakland location. I haven't lived in San Francisco for several years, but it's a great place to be gluten-free. A quick search on Yelp will…

I agree. I haven't inspected their kitchen to see what kind of cross contamination policy they have in place. I felt great though after eating there (luckily!). I'm sure you could talk to a manager and they could let you know or ensure that all of t…

Do you worry about cross contamination at Ike's since they have "regular bread" as well as GF? I agree, Mariposa is great.

Mariposa is the best bakery although its across the bay in Oakland A really great sandwich shop with gf bread is Ikes Place. They have 20+ types of sandwich combinations or burgers. Delish! That is right there in San Fran

Lots of good advice for restaraunts! As for friends' houses, I always ask that they have a few things on hand - prepackaged and unopened that I know are safe. if they have a planned menu sometimes I can even ask for things that are similar, or bring…

I'm so sorry Kevin! I hope you are feeling better soon! definitely go talk with the manager of Outback (early when they are not busy- usually 4- 4:30 ish (if you are off/free then)). They have to know about this! I would also contact the company. Do…

It is frustrating!! Sat night I ate at Outback Steakhouse and ordered from the GF menu. I had ribs and as soon as I starting eating em, the red flag goes off in my head! My wife said I had eaten them before, so I finished my dinner and ordered a flo…

After what feels like a very short 5 1/2 years, I have learned to live a joyous and abundant gluten-free life by setting my own life rules. In some cases I had to enforce my rules "damn the opinion of others", which is not something I thought I had…

Totally true, no idea why it takes the FDA so long - they worked out their definition and rules in 2007... When it comes to eating out in restaurants you just have to get more into the habit of calling (way) in advance and inquire about their menu.…

About all you can do is try a restaurant and if you have problems, don't go back. I found a chinese restaurant who gets their soy sauce from china and it does not have gluton, so it is on my list. I have to be so careful because my celiac got so bad…

I appreciate your response. I am a "foodie". Always have been, used to teach cooking. I do eat out quite a bit; although not as much as I would like to. I do not go to "chain restaurants". I feel like we take our lives/stomachs in our hands every ti…

This does raise the question of how much is too much. Can we really be expected to completely shut ourselves off from the rest of the eating world and have no convenience foods of our own? I admit that there is risk when eating out, which is why I d…

EEEEK, Kevin, watch out for Outback. I used to work at one, so I know what goes on the back of house, and look at their website, etc. They do not promise their Gluten Free foods are Gluten Free and if they are contaminated, it is not their or their…

Gael, thanks for the invitation. I would guess we do have some similarities and don't we both wish we had known about living without gluten earlier in our lives. I lived in Berkeley mostly for years and enjoyed the many fine restaurants in the area. I rarely eat out nowdays not that there is any place close to have gf foods though some of the younger women in this small community bring gf dishes to our potlucks.

You might subscribe to Clean Eating Magazine. I love this Magazine, it has a shopping guide and recipes for the week in the back. It tells you what recipes are gluten free. The other recipes you can easily make gluten free yourself.
Try Elana's Pantry @ wwwelanaspantry.com, she has interesting stuff. Also an important site www.celiac.com full of information and recipes.
