Hi Carla: I agree that tampering with adding or taking away certain things without a concrete diagnosis is not the way to go. I have as a specialist a Dr. McMullen at Trillium West (101 Queensway West Mississauga, Ont.) and he is wonderful. I am fol…
Hi! Haven't posted for awhile, but I am asking if any other Celiac patients have an abdominal rash. I have had an ongoing persistently severe one for years that looks like a painters stroke from left to right, and brightly red just below wear the li…

I am going to check out my local Metro tomorow for the O'Doughs bread, I will call first and then check the internet for the Co-op etc.
Very True! Yet I still list it all and the iron, and the magnesium liquid I must take so I do not bleed to death internally, to reveal that on my tax return that yes, there is and are valid claims, although inadmissable by the C.R A at this time. I…
Yes, If you have the form filled out by your doctor that states that this disability markedly alters your life. Ususally this goes only so far as to include dialysis patients. Marked restrcitions. You may be able to list as ancillary needs with a do…
Hi Jayne! We should all try and find a way to make a 'meeting' for everyone(?) I think I read on Ontario Celiacs that there was a meeting in Brampton for that area in June.
My basic restriction is that I am the sole caregiver for my husband (althou…

About Me
I am 54 years old and diagnosed as an adult with one of the worst cases of Celiac/Gluten disorders with IBS and Colitis that my GE specialist has ever seen. It has been difficult all my life and has also caused severe anemia as well. There are abolutely no intestinal villi in my body. I have 3 adult daughters and a husband on hemo dialysis who was diagnosed with Lupus at the age of 35 and have been absorbed with researching and helping him live his life enduring what he has too. It seems that the Celiac disease has taken a backseat and I realize that for the rest of MY life I must really take control and find all the 'hidden' sources of gluten that seem to be out there. In 2006 I entered the hospital with an out of control gluten'/immune reaction that caused a cardiac respiratory reaction and needing 2 blood transfusions! Does anyone else go through this?

The pastas and of course the breads when and where I can find them at a reasonable price. They are VERY expensive in Ontario, Canada.
I must admit I like Gf waffles, and rice pasta the best. Like everything, partion size comes into it, but being Celiac and finding something Gf I will tend to eat a larger portion size which brings on guilt! What a never ending battle!

wow, that sounds like a very tough time. i have been fortunate enough to not have a severe sensetivity, but i still do my best to avoid gluten at all times.
and youre right, the products are very expensive in ontario. i am currently in europe, where everything is more expensive... except gluten free products seem to be similarly pricced, if not lower. it was a very nice suprise.
I noticed your comment on the challenge to find good gluten-free products for a reasonable price- have you considered the Ontario Natural Food Co-op? They have a great product selection, and their prices (especially when products are on sale) tend to be reasonable price. Check out ONFC.ca

Kate's awesome. She made a presentation to my Healthy Moms Connect group back in 2008.
Thanks for your suggestions! O'dough's is carried at some of the Loblaws chains and Metro locations. For instance, I know that the Fortinos and Metro in my community carries it, and the president of O'Dough's is exploring some additional opportunities with Loblaws.
So, the Loblaws & Metro chains have access to it, the question is as to whether each individual store sees demand for that product line. And unfortunately, as long as they keep stocking their shelves with breads that don't taste good, they will not see the demand for gluten free bread, because people want bread that tastes and feels like bread. If enough people who shop in your store make the request, they will carry it. Have you tried any of the O'Dough's products?
HI Dorothy, thank you for your kind words, it's ironic how we never put 2 and 2 together, but if it hadn't have been for me losing the baby in Sept 08, I'd never have found out I had celiac, so she is my angel, always will be, and even more so because she got me diagnosed basically :).....
My mum, yes, she passed away June 2007. She had breast cancer when I was 15, (17 years ago), went into remission, got leukemia in 2000 because of hte type of chemo she'd been on for the breast cancer and fought that. She relapsed in 2006 though and couldn't fight it this time. So my tattoo is a pink ribbon with an angel hugging it :). I wear it proudly on my arm for everyone to see and am so proud that my baby has the best grandma looking after her "upstairs"
If you're only in the port credit area, I definitely think we should try to arrange a GF BBQ one weekend. Unfortunately hubby and I are always swamped in the summer weekends with stuff but perhaps early September? We can post a message somewhere (either here or on facebook) seeing if there's anyone else that would like to participate?
Are you on my facebook list? (Sue Mason-Morton), feel free to add me there, I'm on there more than I am here but I'm so greatful for this site cause I've met people closer to me area wise :)

BTW I agree that being gf here is very expensive! The bread I was telling you about is about $7 a loaf, but worth every penny. I buy "toast" bread at a place in Scarborough for about $3 a loaf, but it is a very basic bread and not great for sandwiches. But they've raisin bread! If you can go shopping at Wegman's in the States, so much more reasonable. I picked up waffles for $2.60 a box!!
I personally favour Pizza Nova over Pizza Pizza any day! I don't know how often you get to the Toronto area, but Google Molly B's Gluten Free. They've a location in North York and Pickering. But many of their products are sold at various health food stores. I highly recommend anything they make. I will not make my own bread, and their bread is to die for! I cannot give directions, by car or transit anywhere, for I lack a sense of direction!
