Gluten Free Moms

For moms of kids that are gluten free. I have a daughter with a wheat allergy, and know that first hand it is hard to get use to. She also has a SEVERE peanut allergy, so cross contamation is a big problem..

Very excited to find this community online. My husband and I have four kids and our youngest, age 5, has been recently diagnosed with dairy and gluten allergy. We just brought him home in January from Haiti and have been trying to figure out the causes of some of his health problems. I am trying to wrap my head around the gluten-free lifestyle and have not been real successful. I am very interested in hearing stories from other mom's dealing with the same thing. Again, I am very glad to have found this community.

There's a new Blog post on Gluten Free Travel Blog about a gluten-free restaurant near Bethany Beach, DE called The Cafe on 26. We ate there for BOTH breakfast AND dinner during our family's week-long vacation in Ocean City, Maryland last week, and the chef has Celiac and makes nearly everything offered at the restaurant gluten-free!

Be sure to check out our Gluten Free Travel Blog for an interview with Denise Baron, VP of Food and Beverage at Burton's Grill, which offers a top-notch gluten-free menu. They have locations in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Virginia.

What are your favourite gluten free snacks for the kids?

My son has an intolerance to gluten, dairy & eggs. Some of our favourite snacks are:
Walnuts with cinnamon honey
veg with hummus
corn chips with salsa/hummus
Gluten free crisp bread with honey and sunflower seeds
fresh fruit with soy yogurt
gluten free cereal with applesauce (corn flakes, Oh's or granola are popular in our house)
Popcorn with herbamare or a sweet version with cinnamon sugar

I had a great fondue dinner at Melting Pot last week and posted a detailed review of their gluten-free menu on my Blog. In case you don't know, many of their locations also host monthly "Ladies Night," "Teacher Appreciation Night," and "Military Night" -- all with great discounts offered.

We've added another restaurant to our Gluten Free Restaurant Menus page on GlutenFreeTravelSite...if you live in or are traveling to Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, or West Virginia, be sure to check out Glory Days Grill, a American sports-themed restaurant which is great for gluten-free family members of all ages. They've got an extensive new gluten-free menu, and even their wings and BBQ ribs are gluten-free.

I just posted a Blog entry about Burton's Grill, a small restaurant chain with locations in MA, CT, and VA that has a FANTASTIC gluten-free lunch and dinner menu. Read more about it, and be sure to keep it in mind if your travels take you to those areas this summer...

WOW! What a story, Sara. It sounds like you've been through A LOT! Obviously, stick with the gluten-free diet for your daughter since you've seen amazing results. From what I know, if you have Celiac, I believe that you have a 100% chance of passing the GENE onto your offspring. But whether your child ever DEVELOPS Celiac Disease isn't necessarily a given. But again, keep doing what is working for you. If she's on a gluten-free diet, I don't think she can ever develop Celiac Disease b/c you need to have three things: (1.) the gene, (2.) a "trigger" like a virus, stressor, etc., and (3.) you need to be eating gluten. Obviously, I'd make sure she has a good gastroenterologist and allergist that you consult with regularly. Good luck!
