Jenny, I too plant by the moon and plant friendlies with friendlies. It really makes a difference in your crop that gets produced! I grow green beans, great nornthern beans, egg plant, onions, garlic, a ton of herbs, tomatoes, pumpkins, watermelons, strawberries, peppers, lettuce, carrots, broccoli, asparagus, horseradish, rhubarb, radishes, black berries, sun flowers, a cherry tree that is loaded this year with blooms, an apple tree and a plum tree, although my plum tree dont look to good. I may have to replace it. I want to put in grapes also, but that may have to wait til next year! I try to be as self sufficient as possible and am always adding something new each year!!!!!!

Happy Gardening!

I just LOVE this forum - everyone has such great spirit and information.

I just found out that if you get FOOD STAMPS you can buy garden seeds at retail stores that accept FOOD STAMPS with your EBT card!

Isn't that great!

I am disabled because I was hit by a 10 ton UPS truck in 2003. Most supermarkets accept food stamps - however I do not buy food in supermarkets because 85% of what they sell is GMO and irradiated.
and almost everything in the supermarket has high fructose corn syrup and trans fat hydrogenated oil.

So this is what i do - i buy my organic seeds in the supermarket that accepts my EBT food stamp ATM card and believe me - the money you spend on seeds is a LOT more bang for your buck than the money you spend on buying groceries.

Thanks SO much for posting that info that Burpee is definitely not GMO and not owned by Monsanto. that makes me feel a lot better, because Monsanto bought up about 80% of global seed companies all over the world during the 1990's.

Ferry Morse is also independent and privately owned - Ferry Morse has an organic line.

I noticed tonight when I went to Safeway to buy toilet paper, the newspaper and seeds - that Ferry Morse and Burpee have a standard 20% discount at Safeway. There is NO food I can eat at Safeway, but I go there to buy and is not GMO.

So I break down and shop at Safeway because I can buy organic stamps with my Food Stamp EBT card and get stuff like scotch tape, a corkscrew to open a wine bottle, a greeting card......the knick-knack stuff.

Here in Sacramento, california we are blessed with the most fertile soil in the world in the San Joaquin Central Valley and a year round growing season since it is a Meditteranean climate - normally I am doing spring planting by the middle of February. Due to climate change - it just recently got warm enough to start spring planting and it is early April. Global Warming means not just getting hotter on the planet - but disruption of all our weather - so I am doing my best to watch the seasons and be flexible = in tune with nature and the imbalance in the rhythms of the earth due to humans screwing up the environment.

I am an avid afficiando of vermiculture - I have a huge bin I built out of recycled wood pallets and it is a compost bin - worm bin. I'd like to hear if anyone has good luck with worms - their pee and castings (the poop) is liquid gold

I am also studying more about biodynamic gardening and if anyone has ideas and knowledge about that - please post your experience.

Happy Springtime!

Helloooo,
I'm brand new to this group and this whole site but I'm a gardener too! I just went to a local seed swap and I got almost all the seeds I need for my garden for free! I'm really excited to start planting and this season I am planting according to the phases of the moon. Does anyone here do that? I've heard it's absolutely amazing the difference the pull of water the moon creates in the initial growth of roots, and in the following phase the growth of leaves. Even though I'm living in northern WI the weather is so funky that it's already reached high 60s and stayed above freezing at night so I am planning to plant my seeds on the next New Moon.

What are you planning to plant in your garden and where are you growing??

Here is an email I received from Burpees this weekend.

Dear Ms Harris,
Burpee seeds is its own company and in NO WAY affiliated with
Montasanto or any other of the GMO companies.
We have our own growers and vendors that are strictly supervised by the
FDA.
We only carry Heirloom, Certified organic seeds, hybrids, and standard
seeds. None of our seeds are treated either.
Hope this helps.

Please note when responding, include past email histories

Sincerly,

Will deer, rabbits or woodchucks bother sweet potato plants?

Hey, just a thought, but maybe next year we could start a seed swap!

I ordered seeds from Bakers Creek, here in Mo. ALL the seeds have germinated and look wonderful! Heres the link: http://rareseeds.com/
I purchased all sorts of seeds from them including garlic which came in the bulb form, ALL of them came up this spring!

Nancy, I grow sweet potatoes every year. take a potato and stick it in a glass of water, in a window, shoots will grow off it, take the shoots when they are about 3 or 4 inches tall and stick them in water for a couple of days to get the roots started and then stick them in the ground! Its that easy!

Ps: I too have seen Food INC and was sickened to death by it and I agree completely that monsanto (small caps intended) is a horrible company!

Anyone ever grow sweet potatoes? I love the white sweet potato, nutritiously dense and delicious. However I have never tried growing them before. We have a lot of potato farmers around my area but not sure sweet and nightshade variety grow the same. ?????

Monsanto is a SICK company and I personally will do everything I can to spread the word to anyone who will listen, that we need to get back to eating REAL food.
That said, I found a seed company relatively close to home. It is the Territorial Seed company in Oregon. www.territorialseed.com. I talked with a gal here in my hometown who has used them for some time with great results.
I am so excited to get my garden growing again. Nothing like fresh fruit and veggies from yard to plate. YUMMMMYYY

I voted for Obama but he has turned out to be a HUGE disappointment. How can he rationalize having his wife planting an organic vegetable garden on the lawn of the White House - then his completely enmeshed relationship with Monsanto?

Obama thinks GMO is terrific and is convinced that it is going to solve world hunger and improve crop yields - yet there is ZERO evidence to support this. GMO was made legal in the early 1990's - it's been over 10 years that GMO has been spread all over the world - and world hunger has increased - not decreased. GMO has NOTHING to do with solving world hunger - but it is about biotechnology companies having complete hegemony over our global food supply - by having a monopoloy on seeds - they could rule the world. We all have to eat, right?

Tom Vislack was Obama's appointee to Dept of Agricutlure Head - and Vislack was an employee of Monsanto at the top corporate level. The whole thing is a racket.........there was an online campaign to try to convince Obama to appoint someone like Jim Hightower or other sustainable ag advocates and Obama didn't even acknolwedge citizen protest about Tom Visilack's appointment to be director of the USDA.

Did you know that creepy sexual harrasser who made obscene sexual advances to Anita Hill when she was clerking for him - that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas worked as a top Monsanto lawyer for many years? It was HIS vote which tipped the balance in the early 1990's to legalize GMO crops. Clarence Thomas should have recused himself due to huge conflict of interest issues, but that problem was not even raised - I doubt most Americans have any idea that 85% of supermarket food is GMO and half of it is irradiated.

At least Michael Pollan was on Oprah yesterday. The entire segment was devoted to him and Alicia Silverstone did a segment about a plant based diet - she has a book called "The Kind Diet". Oprah said if you go to her website at www.oprah.com there is a link to watch for FREE
"Food Inc" - I saw that movie TWICE in one week last year when it was first released - it is the best documentary I ever saw - there is so much information in it that you can view it several times and still not take in all the info. It was nominated for an Oscar this year. I don't remember who won the oscar for best documentary - but "Food Inc" sure deserved it!

I really liked Alicia Silverstone's segment on Oprah which just aired on March 11th - she is a great vegan chef and made luscious meal for her friend, actress Laura Linney. Then she took a tour of Whole Foods and pointed out her favorite organic foods. Alicia Silverstone is a passionate vegan.....remember right after she became a huge star with "Clueless" in 1995 she gained a LOT of weight and got hammered by the tabloids for being overweight?

She said she was on the "Steak and Do-Nut Diet" and became a vegan to lose weight - but her hair and skin dramatically improved and she had much more energy as an organic vegan - so she became an advocate for organic vegan food.

I was vegan for 30 years but in 1997 started eating small amounts of pastured, grass fed organic permaculture animal protein - I never never eat organic beef, but I do eat small amounts of organic eggs, youghurt, cheese and a little organic turkey. 85% of my diet is plant based though.

Yes, GMO is awful - mostly because the public has been treated like a mushroom - kept in the dark and fed bullshit!

As a gardener I try very very hard to avoid GMO seeds. It is expensive to buy organic seeds - but I started "seed saving" and let some of my plants bolt and go to seed and then capture them. It works out to about $3,000 a pound if you are buying organic seeds. A little packet has about 1/16th of a teaspoon of organic seeds and the average price is around $2.00 to $2.50 a packet.

that deal I mentioned previously - call Ferry Morse 800# and order 75 packets of seeds and get 50% discount! They have a big selection of organic seeds and ALL their seeds are GMO free - Ferry Morse is privatley owned.
