I have cut out wheat and then gluten from my diet and it's changed my life.I have to go and have a blood test to verify my suspicions, how long do I have to go back to eating gluten to give an accurate result? Not looking forward to feeling awful again.

If eating gluten free has made that much of a difference in your life, do you need a definitive diagnosis?
Just wondering how important the test results are that you would risk damaging your villi more than you already have.
Take care of you,
Jayne
I actually did the same thing you have done about a year ago, and I never recieved an accurate diagnosis. So I ask you this: what's leading you to feel you HAVE to have the test to confirm it? It's not worth going through literal hell to have a piece of paper saying what you already know.
Hi Jayne, thanks for replying..the reason I had the test was that if I have celiacs disease,I may have a problem with my thyroid or/& bad bits of bowel that needs treatment..the doc wanted to rule it out. I did eat wheat products for the day & wow did i suffer and still am, I feel so bloated and sore ulcers all over my tongue and inside my mouth..all quite alarming after just 2 meals and a few biscuits..I'm grateful to know what's been wrong with me.

Thanks for replying..the doc wanted to know if it's an intolerance or celiacs disease in case I need further help with my thyroid. They also tested for liver & renal function-don't know why.I did eat 2 meals including wheat before the test (yesterday)and I'm so bloated and have ulcers inside my mouth & tongue with nausea. Can't believe how much it has affected me &I'm a bit shocked & can't believe how fortunate I feel to have found what the problem has been with a host of symptoms that never added up. I'm 40 now & am a bit concerned at the extent of the damage if any.Do you know I my body will repair itself?Good to make contact with someone who knows what it's like to live with this.

Hi Angela,
Have you tried contacting the coeliac charity in the UK? You can find its web page at http://www.coeliac.org.uk/
There it tells you that its helpline number is 0845 305 2060. They have a dietitian or two who know about the coeliac and gluten-free conditions, and they should be able to answer most if not all of your queries.
Hope this helps, and wishing you very good luck in your search for answers.
Peter.
Most of the time, they recommend at least 6 months, but I did read a study that said if you had been gluten free, it could take up to 5 years before the damage came back. I agree with Jayne, you personally know what the results of being gluten free has done for you. I am sorry that you are suffering such harsh side effects of contamination. I have also read researches that state after being gluten free for a time, that the side effects and symptoms can be more harsh on the body because it is so offending to the system. I think this might be why you are having such severe reactions in such a short time. I have been diagnosed as gluten intolerant, but I as well as my GI believe that I have CD, but am NOT willing to go through what you are going through only to have it on a piece of paper. Have you had genetic testing done? There are two specific genes, one says you have a higher chance of having or getting cd at some point in you life (HLA-DQ8), and the other says you have it (HLA-DQ2/HLA-DQ2). I have also read recent studies that they are discovering a couple more genes that are only found in those with cd but it is still not used in the definitive diagnosis.

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Jen
I can understand wanting to know whether you are celiac or just gluten intolerant. The medical implications such as cancer risk I suppose are different depending on which you have. I too, am not sure. I had a high score on an Igg blood test, but a normal score on the ttg and iga tests. Never had a biopsy done. One of the GI's I have gone to said I would have to stay on the gluten a couple of months prior to a biopsy. I can understand some other responders questioning why you would want to get tested, but I also respect your desire to know. I think celiac is a more serious conditon than gluten intolerance and one might want to know which they have.
